Seminar Spotlight

Agile Programming at the 27th Annual Minnesota Government Information Technology Symposium

On December 16, 2008, we delivered an all-day seminar at the 27th Annual Minnesota Government Information Technology Symposium on Agile Programming.

Agile Programming Seminar Description

Agile programming has become one of the most widely used and successful software development methodologies in the private sector. It has been shown to substantially reduce cycle time while producing increased code quality. Agile development is a collection of practices, and a philosophy of development that emphasizes lea/just-in-time development; code quality; continuous integration; small, iterative releases; simplicity; and close business/developer cooperation and openness.

While Agile has been used in the private sector for the past 10 years, it hasn’t been widely adopted in the public sector. The State of Minnesota has conducted training in Agile and has tried it out in several pilots. However, it is still widely unknown or understood within the State’s IT community.

This full day seminar introduces Agile methods and explains its potential benefits. The presentation will be a “day in the life of an Agile project.” It will include extensive hands-on exercise that will cover: Agile philosophy and practices; How to write User Stories and conduct a Planning Game; release planning; Agile meetings; test-first methodology; continuous integration.

Key Issues:

  • Agile philosophy and practices
  • Discus and demonstrate the benefits
  • What it feels like to run an Agile project by doing a multi-iteration development in the tutorial
